About the place
One of the oldest lesser-known gems among Basavangudi’s ancient temples is the Karanji Anjaneya Swamy Temple in Bangalore. The temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, and the idol that is approximately 7 feet tall is believed to be “Swayambhu” which means the idol was not carved or sculptured or created by anyone.
As per traditions, Hanuman is always found in close proximity to Sri Rama – hence the temple also has a dedicated space for Lord Shri Rama, Sita Mata, and Lakshmana. Along with Lord Shri Rama, Sita Mata, and Lakshmana, one can also worship Godadevi/Andal in this temple.
Karanji Anjaneya Temple History
This famous Hanuman temple in Bangalore is located very close to the Big Bull temple – “Basavana Gudi” and Shri Dodda Ganapati temple. Further historians have drawn similarities in the artwork and sculptural nuances of the idols of Dodda Ganapati, Big Bull, and Anjaneya – hence there is a popular theory that even Karanji Anjaneya Swamy Temple was built around the 15th century by Kempe Gowda I.
There is also an interesting tale on how the word “Karanji” used to refer to the temple. It is believed that Kerenji Anjaneya temple was on the banks of a lake – hence “Kere” in Kannada is a lake or tank and “Anji” is Anchu or border together giving it the name “Karanji”.
Interesting Facts
- The Anjenaya idol is very auspicious considering its connection to Sundarakanda of Ramayana – as the idol holds the Choodamani, given by Seethadevi at Ashoka Gardens of Lanka.
- From the Rama temple, one can see a window through which Hanuman watches over the Shri Rama/Sita mata and Lakshmana idols.
- Special Pujas and Homas are conducted on the occasions of Hanuman Jayanti and Shri Rama Navami.
- The temple has ample parking space – also used to set up a fair during the Kadle kai parse. The fair during Kadle Kai Parise is vibrant with all sorts of games that brings out the old Bangalore charm.
